Title – Ten Minute Easter Activity Book
Author – Bethan James & Heather Stewart
Format – A4 Paperback
Price – £3.99
Publisher – Barnabas for Children (BRF)
Date of Publication – January 2013
ISBN – 978-0-85746-138-4
Reviewer – Melanie Carroll

Colourful activity book for the 7+ age group I would say, each ‘activity set’ has a story component, and then word and logic puzzles for the children to have fun doing that are estimated to take about 10 minutes. Although called the Easter activity book it actually goes well past the lent/easter stories and into some of the ascension and acts material. In all there are 22 activities sets/stories in the book and it would be great for keeping kids amused and informed about the lent/easter season, and at 10 minutes or thereabouts just right for giving them during a sermon, or even quite good for using during a series of Sunday school sessions.

Title – My Very First Bible
Author – Lois Rock
Format – Small Hardback
Price – £4.99
Publisher – Lion Childrens
Date of Publication – October 2012
ISBN – 978-0-7459-6148-4-9
Reviewer – Melanie Carroll

Lovely new mini-format of a well established and loved childrens first bible, with lovely, colourful and simple drawings by Alex Ayliffe and words by Lois Rock. This edition has a lovely padded jacket cover and obviously being in the mini format is perfect for little hands to handle. At only £4.99 it would make a lovely little gift too for a special occasion, or just a lovely bible story book for a younger child at anytime.

Title – Psalms, Prayers And Praises
Author – Sophie Piper
Format – Small Hardback
Price – £6.99
Publisher – Lion Childrens
Date of Publication – October 2012
ISBN – 978-0-7459-6382-2
Reviewer – Melanie Carroll

In the same style and series as the wonderful Our Father, 10 Commandments and My First Holy Communion Gift books, Psalms, Prayers and Praises will make a fantastic edition to these white hardback gift books with gold foiled covers – this one is a particularly good addition because with the variety of material included it really would be suitable for the widest range of occasions from older child baptisms through to younger child confirmations, and even birthdays or as an easter gift maybe. Lovely illustrations by Angelo Ruta and short verses make this a lovely little gift book.

Title – The Lion Book Of Prayers For Me
Author – Christina Goodings
Format – Small Hardback
Price – £5.99
Publisher – Lion Childrens
Date of Publication – October 2012
ISBN – 978-0-7459-6346-4
Reviewer Melanie Carroll

A lovely padded jacket children sized book of prayers to match the previously released Lion Bible For Me. Wonderful simple colouring book style images from Emily Bolam make this a fresh and appealing Childrens book with simple and appropriate prayers that cover a whole range of occasions and situations, including Christmas and Easter as well as the usual thankful, sorry, joyful type ones that are to be expected in a beginner/toddler prayer book.

Title – The Story Of Easter
Author – Fiona Boon
Format – Small Hardback boardbook with Carrying Handle
Price – £4.99
Publisher – Authentic
Date of Publication – February 2013
ISBN – 978-1-86024-883-2
Reviewer Melanie Carroll

A lovely new edition to the Easter market for little children and toddlers, a small padded jacket board book with carrying handle. Inside the pages are a bit frenetic but in a wonderfully fun way with busy pencil drawn style characters with collage style fabric pattern backgrounds and clothing. The words are done in a lovely curved way with some words emphasised in bold that almost makes you sing them out. Lovely and fun with a hint of serious but not sombre make it totally appropriate for a tiny audience.

Title – Easter (Candle Library Series)
Author – Karen Williamson
Format – Box Set Board Books
Price – £3.99
Publisher – Candle Books (Lion Hudson)
Date of Publication – February 2013
ISBN 978-1-85985-942-1
Reviewer Melanie Carroll

Another from the Candle Library series of lovely little boxed sets of 6 small board books and at a really good price too. In this Easter Collection we have ‘Jesus Rides to Jerusalem’, ‘A Special meal’, Jesus is Arrested’ ‘Jesus Dies on a Cross’, ‘Jesus is Alive!’ and finally ‘Jesus Returns to Hid Father’. They are lovely small books with wonderfully colourful images and simple storylines in each. Great for any child, and they would also make a great addition to any church group or library, or even to be split up and given as easter gifts to a Sunday school class perhaps.
Title – The Life Of Jesus
Author – Sophie Piper
Format – Small Hardback
Price – £9.99
Publisher – Lion Childrens
Date of Publication – January 2013
ISBN – 978-0-7459-6367-9
Reviewer – Melanie Carroll

Though in the same style and series as the lovely Our Father, 10 Commandments, My First Holy Communion, and Psalms, Prayers and Praises this is a more ‘grown up’ affair for want of a better term, being aimed I would think at a slightly older child given the size of type being used. It does though make a fantastic ‘bible’ addition to these white hardback gift books with gold foiled covers. It is a particularly good addition for those who want to give a gift of the story narrative of Jesus’s life, because each story has the corresponding reference to where it can be found in the bible, and there is a great short introduction that introduces Jesus and how the bible contains a collection of stories about him. It really would be suitable for the widest range of occasions but perhaps most perfect for someone new to the church or making their communion or confirmation. Lovely illustrations by Angelo Ruta and well written stories make this a lovely gift book.

 Title – The First Easter
Author – Lois Rock
Format – Hardback
Price – £3.99
Publisher – Lion Childrens
Date of Publication – January 2013
ISBN – 978-0-7459-6320-4
Reviewer – Melanie Carroll

This is not a new book as such but it is a new hardback edition of a popular book by lLois Rock with illustrations by Sophie Allsopp. The story of Holy Week and Easter then Pentecost and the disciples setting forth to spread the Good News follows true to the story told in the Gospels. The lovely, but serious looking, watercolour illustrations really suit the story and add weight to the telling. This is a lovely and sensitive easter book and at the price a very good buy too.

Title – The Lord’s Prayer – And Other Classic Prayers For Children
Author – Lois Rock
Format – Hardback
Price – £3.99
Publisher – Lion Childrens
Date of Publication – January 2013
ISBN – 978-0-7459-6322-8
Reviewer – Melanie Carroll

A beautiful collection of Prayers for children with the most lovely and evocative watercolour painting illustrations from Sophie Alssopp make this a wonderful book and an absolute bargain at the price it is, especially given the gold foiling on its cover which makes it a perfect looking gift  or prize giving book. With 27 short but suitable prayers from a range of sources covering not only the bible and other traditional sources, but Mother Teresa and John Milton too, and then arranged into themes for easy use – with a first line appendix in the back too! - really means this is a great little prayer book indeed.

Title – Easter Sticker Book
Author – Karen Williamson
Format – Staple Fold
Price – £2.99
Publisher –Candle Books (Lion Hudson)
Date of Publication – January 2013
ISBN – 978-1-85985-943-8
Reviewer – Melanie Carroll

I love the format of this little Easter sticker book , it so takes me back to primary school days! It’s one of those books where the picture is above taking up much of the page and the words are on a white band in beautifully clear black print across the bottom. Lovely for children just learning to read alone. The stickers that come with the book are easy to place for young children too because they fit over the faded image in the pictures. Altogether a great little book.

Title – Busy Bee’s Easter – Activity Book With Stickers
Author – Jocelyn Miller
Format – A4 Staple fold
Price – £4.99
Publisher – Lion Childrens
Date of Publication – January 2013
ISBN – 978-0-7459-6373-0
Reviewer Melanie Carroll

Fantastic Easter fun and crafts with this activity book. Yes it has stickers, and a couple of pages of actual do in the book activities, some with a religious look and theme, but mostly this book is an action filled craft time book that would do for any group of children regardless of churchmanship or non! Easter eggs galore and fun, Easter egg bunting, Easter egg baskets, spring flower cards, Easter bunnies and carrot boxes to make – it’s a great craft filled book and would be a great book for any Children’s group or pack leader, or parent looking for some idea’s and things to do in the run up to Easter.

If you've been down to the shop today...

If you've been down to the shop today you may have got a surprise!
Books have been moving - in fact every secondhand book has moved to a new home ... we'd have really liked it if they moved themselves something like this:

But they didn't!  Instead I did it (along with some conscripted family and mini minions for a few shelves)!

It was a task and a half but well worth it as it means we can again fit more things in! Yes MORE!
This time not only more secondhand fiction but a whole new glass shelved display of Gifts!

It's not all quite finished yet, but it's getting there ... we are awaiting a delivery or two of new gift stock to come in, and that's why everything had to be moved. So they would have a nice new home ... not as some may claim because the bookshop boss just likes to change it up like the supermarket and keep the customers guessing!
The minion and mates that suggested that were duly despatched ... to get coffee for said hardworked bookshop boss.

We would also like to put customers minds at rest and assure them that no bookcases or books were harmed in the making of this wonderful new shop design - although the same cannot be said for the bookshop boss who was savaged more than once by errant bookcases and vicious thrillers that decided to jump off shelves and pound her into the ground in one notable case!

Still we have survived to tell the tale and invite you all to come down and see what's new and acquaint yourself with some great bargains and new books & gifts too.

Anyway I'm now off to grab a sugar free vanilla latte & a cookie to refuel before playing with the gift displays a little and putting out some new card ranges :D See you all soon here in the shop...
Remember we are here to serve you and we really appreciate your support - go on Shop Local and use an Independent - it's better for all of us when we go local to go global ;-)

So we'll look forward to seeing you, recieving an email from you, chatting on the phone (01522 525557) with you or even facebooking or twittering with you when you come in for your look around, books and supplies - or indeed for any other reason too!

Is it possible for a ten-year-old girl to fall in love? Jenny Mercer thought so. Evacuated to Lincolnshire from the East End of London at the outbreak of war, she is frightened of the wide open spaces and the huge skies. At first, she is treated badly by the two spinsters with whom she is billeted. But the kindly Thornton family soon makes her feel welcome. And no one more so than Georgie, the handsome RAF fighter pilot, who is caught up in the battle for Britain’s survival. When Georgie is posted missing, presumed killed, Jenny is devastated and there is more heartbreak when her mother demands that she return home to the dangerous city streets now under almost daily attack from enemy bombers. Dot never hides the fact that her daughter’s birth was a mistake and kindness and care towards Jenny comes, not from her mother, but from their neighbours across the street, the Hutton family. The only other person to show concern for Jenny is, strangely, Dot’s ‘fancy man’, Arthur Osborne, who moves into the terraced house. But is Arthur only interested in the girl because she can be useful to him? No one will suspect a ten-year-old of being involved with the Black Market. When the law comes a little too close for Arthur’s comfort, the family flees in the night under the protection of the blackout, heading north out of the city. But to Jenny’s disappointment, it is not back to Lincolnshire but into the hills and dales of Derbyshire where they are always on the move, always on the run. There, Jenny is caught up in a life of deception, obliged to do whatever her mother and Arthur demand of her, when all she really wants is to go back to Lincolnshire. For Jenny has never given up hope that one day, Georgie will come back…

An Ebook Reader Christmas? You can still support Local Bookshops!

Despite what everyone seems to be saying ebooks & your local bookshop don't have to be a mutually exclusive proposition - in fact there are a few ways you can happily use both, thus benefitting your local community and your digital drive!

Here are our very easy suggestions:

Go to our webshop http://www.lincolnbookshop.co.uk/ & use our ebook affilliate links - this is perfect for buying Kindles on and for buying kindle books through - as each sale using this link helps us just a little and costs you nothing more than to favourite the site and click through for your purchases of any amazon product ;-)

Come into the shop (or email/phone/tweet/Facebook us) and buy a National Book Token from us & then you can buy ebooks with it at http://www.hive.co.uk/shop/lincoln/unicorn-tree-books-crafts/
Hive has multiple ebook formats available (though not kindle) and you can also buy Google Ebooks through them as well.
Every single sale from hive.co.uk helps an independent bookshop - not always us depending on where you are but it will always be supporting a local independent bookshop! (and sometimes it's even been known for the books to be cheaper than Amazon's price!).

So there you go - easy ways it can be an Ebook Christmas without being Scrooge like for your local Independent Bookshop here on the High Street or in The Market :D
Remember we are here to serve you and we really appreciate your support - go on Shop Local - it's better for all of us when we go local to go global ;-)

So we'll look forward to seeing you, recieving an email from you, chatting on the phone (01522 525557) with you or even facebooking or twittering with you!
Oh and happy season, may the coffee be good and the chocolate be rich and may it be a cool yule and a Blessed Christmas & New Year to all you friends out there!

Yes, That's right, Polish books coming to Unicorn Tree Books soon!
Many top fiction authors and styles ordered in - other titles can be ordered on request!

We are really happy to say that we are now able to source a wide range of books in Polish so that we can better serve our new neighbours and friends here in Lincoln and across Lincolnshire.

We are committed to really being a bookshop that serves the community we are in, and so getting in Polish books really was an important item on our list of how we can better serve the community.

We are really happy to have found a supplier in Gardner's Books that also feels that committment and is carrying polish language titles as part of their stock range too, the added benefit here is that these books are also available on www.hive.co.uk - the website that supports independent local bookshops through every sale of a book or ebook download.

The first selection of fiction in Polish will be here in the shop and on the shelves by Wednesday 21st December, with an expanded range to follow in mid January.

It's hoped the choice should appeal to a broad range of readers with some crime, thriller, romance and childrens books too!

We are starting out with a small selection but as people come in and let us know what they are interested in and as they spread the word we really hope to be able to grow the range and space given to these books to really be able to serve our growing multi-lingual community.

Books can be ordered - just let us know the title you are after and we'll do our best to get it.
Remember you can either pop in to the shop to order in store (and check the shleves to see what we already have in stock) or you can go online to www.hive.co.uk where you can then have them delivered either to your home or arrange to collect them direct from Unicorn Tree Books.

UTB Video Book Review - maybe never again!

Lol - ok can you tell that things were a bit quiet in the shop! Anyway this is what happens when you decide on the spur of the moment to try to record a video review in the shop on your smart phone - the phone may be smart the owner not so!
Anyway lets pretend for a minute that its one of those experimental indie art films, weird angles totally required, along with strange talking head moments!
That aside though the book, Rumors of God, is really very good and totally recommended!

Have you seen the new NRSV Bible with the Common Worship Daily Prayer and Readings included!

Now out from HarperCollins It's incredibly good value at only £17.99 a copy and would make a fantastic Confirmation or Ordination present amongst other things, or as just a treat for yourself!

'A new Bible published in partnership with the Church of England and designed especially for Anglicans. It includes Daily Prayer and Readings from the Church of England’s Common Worship.
As well as the full anglicized text of the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) translation, this Bible contains a number of features specially designed to make it ideal for members of the Church of England.
It includes Prayer During the Day and Night Prayer, which gives users a short prayer to say during and at the end of their day. It also includes a Lectionary of readings, giving two readings for every day of the year.
Until now, Anglicans needed three different books to go about their daily worship – a Bible, a prayer book, and a lectionary. Now they only need one.'

Ebooks here to stay and we are there too - and in the Lincolnshire Echo!

Lincoln Echo: Saturday, February 26, 2011,

E-books here to stay

A BOOKSELLER from Lincoln is broaching the digital frontier and embracing new "e-books".

Bookshop giants such as Amazon recently reported that sales of downloadable texts have now overtaken paperback books.

And Melanie Carroll, of Unicorn Tree Books in Lincoln Central Market, says with the new digital books here to stay she's partnering with some of her biggest competition to ensure her customers can continue to support the Lincoln economy.

"E-books won't go away, so we can't ignore them," she said.

"This way people can still contribute to the local economy even if they now have a Kindle or e-reader."

We are starting a Crafters Exchange here - it's a bit like a crafters swap shop!

Unicorn Tree Crafters Exchange

We are starting a Crafters Exchange here – basically that means that you can bring along an item such as a rubber stamp or punch you no longer use and get a credit for it to use on craft items from us!

So do you have craft items that you loved but now never use?
Or maybe something that came in a set that just isn’t your thing?
Rubber stamps, punches, scissors, embellishments – maybe even packs of cards and books of papers you’ve never touched?
Then how about exchanging them for a discount on something you might use??

Go on think about it, after all in the words of the giants ‘every little bit helps!’ oh and don’t forget to tell others, after all who knows what gems are out there sitting dusty in craft cupboards everywhere!

Now for the not as fun but just as important bit:
Even the art of creative self-expression has to work with some sort of guidelines!
So there are some rules and guidelines to the Crafters Exchange Scheme –

Some of which are pretty obvious like Only items in good condition can be exchanged.

Now we appreciate rubber stamps get inky and that’s fine so long as they are cleaned before you bring them in – also they must make perfect impressions.
Scissors & Punches too must be in perfect condition and cut or punch smoothly and cleanly.
Cards & Papers must be full sets & unused.

Any and all credits given are entirely at our discretion and terms and conditions apply - you can get the full set of these at the shop :)
Please note this is a Credit Scheme only and we do not ever give cash, all credit/exchange vouchers have a nil cash value.

So there we go, another way you can share and save - we think it's a great idea and we hope you do too! So go on tell others and let's see what we can find after all one crafters decoupage is another crafters topper!
