Some days you open the mail and remember why you love working at Unicorn Tree Books in Lincoln Central Market... And you also are reminded how God speaks and answers things in unexpected ways! So another 2 birds 1 stone #lentchallenge (remember) post and some amazing books. Reviews for all will follow but I can say I'm half way through 'Interrupting Silence' by Walter Brueggemann which as always is deep but readable and has great sized print... And though short has good reflection questions at the end of each chapter that really make you stop and think! Next though I'm going to have to read 'Vindicating the Vixens' edited by Sandra GLAFN because when I flicked it open the chapter on Bathsheba that it opened on just sucked me in... Deep, complex, authoritative, engaging, challenging, meaningful are just some of the words that cover this.. And if the other chapters are so well written and blend together scholarly biblical insight with modern themes then it's going to be a joy to read indeed. 'Drawing Closer to God' by Joseph Malham is going to be lenten exercise for me - although designed to be an 8 day personal retreat I've looked and can easily make it into a 6 week exercise that will take me into Easter and gift me with a completed Christ Pantocrator Icon to read and study... If Icons are something you have an interest in then this Icon Retreat and active guide to writing one is truly a must. Finally I am really looking forward to engrossing myself in Diarmuid O'Murchuvs new book - 'Incarnation: A new evolutionary threshold'. I have no doubt it will be a real joy to read, and challenge me in all the right ways to look at both incarnation and creation in new ways. So there we go and #remember that all these books (and many more) are available from local Independent bookshops like us here at Unicorn Tree Books in Lincoln Central Market, and that we rely on your direct purchases from us to stay active and in your towns and cities... So. Please think independent before Internet if you can when making your purchase choice. http://ift.tt/1TEBPlr #book #books #bookshop #indiebookshop #christianbookshop #reviews

Two birds one stone... #lentchallenge (Learn) and also the books across my desk at Unicorn Tree Books in Lincoln Central Market that I'm reading and reviewing! First off the beautiful and intense, 'Breathing Deep: Life in the Spirit of Easter' by Ian Adams from Canterbury Press is my personal Lent book of choice and I'd certainly highly recommend this and his other works. 'A History of the Church in 100 Objects' by Mike & Grace Aquilina is lso a wonderful and enjoyable book that takes you on a most unusual journey of the church's history... Each chapter is short and intriguing, as are the objects!, with a helpful more section of titles that will cover that time in history. Great book from Ave Maria Press & Alban Books. My final two reads this week are from @brfonline, one being 'Vibration Christianity in Multifaith Britain' by Andrew Smith which is a very helpful short, insightful, book on engaging with other faiths and considering how we live out our own faith and the witness that can be when we engage considerately, openly, and thoughtfully in the places we live and with the people there. Finally we come to 'A guide to Mission Accompaniment' by Kerry M. Thorpe and in some ways this goes really well with the previous book, because this is a book about walking with others, about accompanying those we are engaged with in faith. So part mentorship, part mission, part spiritual direction maybe... But above all about real fellowship and relationships... About the idea of journeying and growing together through building each other up. A really good book for ministers, pioneers, and even just ordinary congregation members because this is one thing we all can and should do. So there we go, 2 birds, 1 stone, 3 publishers, and 4 great books ;) All these books are available from your local Independent Christian Bookshop, like us here at Unicorn Tree Books in Lincoln Central Market, and please do make your purchases from a real independent high street bookshop whenever you can because it's only through those purchases that Bookshops can stay in our town and cities :) http://ift.tt/1TEBPlr #book #books #bookshop #indiebookshop #christianbookshop #reviews

So for this week's reading of the books that came across my desk at Unicorn Tree Books in Lincoln Central Market I'm going for an on topic selection of books by and about strong, articulate and intelligent women given its the 100 year anniversary of some women in the UK first getting the vote! The first three are from Alban Books but are Orbis Titles: 'On Being Unfinished ' by Anne E Partick - a collection of deeply interesting theological writings from this Catholic theologian on issues of feminism, media, imaginative literature, language, and vocation to name a few. All well considered and intriguing, well worth the read. 'Women leaders in the Student Christian Movement 1880-1920' by Thomas A Russel really highlights the catalyst and strength of women during these suffragette years and how women's channeled energy achieves amazing things. 'The Image of the Unseen God: by Thomas Hosinski has a forward from the amazing Ilia Delia and is a beautifully deep theological book that moves us through church history, biblical studies, and science to help build the reflection of the beautiful inclusivity, nature, and understanding of God that is envolving. Finally the last book is from New City Press and is by the amazing Chiara Lubich and is on 'Mary Flower of Humanity'. A beautiful book that looks at ecumenism, Faith, strength, sorrow and how all are called to become 'little Marys' in their Yes to God. All these wonderful books and more are available from your local Independent Bookshops like us here at Unicorn Tree Books in Lincoln Central Market. Please support us, and them, by making your purchases from them as that's the only way they can survive. http://ift.tt/1TEBPlr #book #books #bookshop #indiebookshop #christianbookshop #christianbooks #spirituality #faith #review #authors #publishers #buylocal #christian #theology

Wow.. These just came across the desk at Unicorn Tree Books in Lincoln Central Market this morning! It's not often that I turn a review around quite this quickly but these have honestly got me hooked... From @brfonline this 'Holy Habits: Missional Discipleship Resources for Churches' is fantastic (and at only £4.99 each incredibly good value!). Bases o Act 2:42-47 10 subjects are covered and in each booklet you get the basis of a service, a series of small group resources, some great all age activities, some looking deeper study and consideration, and finally at the back a series of Arts & Media suggestions including books (fiction and nonfiction), poetry, articles, films and art that deal with the theme in hand... Honestly these are fantastic and work as film night ideas and book group suggestions too that would help you cross the church/unchecked boundaries really well. These work across the denominations, or indeed would be really helpful for non-denominational or Fresh Expression type initiatives (I genuinely am taking 3 home to use some of the material with my Lincoln Forest Church folk!). So there we go, I genuinely think if you are involved with church and would like something to help with some new ideas then these are seriously worth the look and consideration indeed. As always these and many other brilliant books and resources can be purchased at independent Bookshops, like us here at Unicorn Tree Books in Lincoln Central Market, who rely on your support and purchases to continue being in our towns and cities ;) http://ift.tt/1TEBPlr #book #books #bookshop #indiebookshop #christianbookshop #christianbooks #spirituality #faith #review #mission #worship #discipleship #christian #prayer #prayeractivities #fellowship #biblicalstudies #churchresources #brf #biblereadingfellowship #churchespecially #lincoln #lincolnshire

Just some amazing books coming across my desk at Unicorn Tree Books in Lincoln Central Market for me to read (and in turn you all to buy!). Seriously 'For Good - The Church and the Future of Welfare' is a short book of 90pp that packs well above its weight and truly is a must read for all interested or involved in knowing about and practicing transformative change in welfare issues... A real book of social change issues for churches (and wider!), an essential read from @canterburypress. Next up I can honestly say that 'Blue Planet Blue God' is the book as a Christian you need to be reading alongside Attenborough's Blue Planet! This book isnt just about climate change and water rights issues, but us about the wonder, majesty, and intrinsic beauty and power that is water in all its forms and how that deep peaks to the soul of us too. Beautiful and deep book from @scm_press. Next up, Christian Alternatives have published 'Why Progressives Need God' by Clatworthy, thisis a deeply rich and readable study (that reads a little like a philosophical manifesto in some parts) on monotheism for progressives. It's a deeply interesting read, especially as we dig down deeply into what 'Monotheism' really is and means... Especially in today's culture. Another good book for personal reading but that would make a great group discussion read if you ask me! Finally one I'm taking home next... 'New World, New Church' by Hannah Steel and from @scm_press... Looking at the theology of the emerging church movement and its proponents, should be interesting and thought provoking I'd think. Now remember all these books and other really good ones like them are available from your independent Bookshops like us here at Unicorn Tree Books in Lincoln Central Market and we all rely on you to buy from us to kept us real, here, and vibrant in your towns and cities so please do support us :) http://ift.tt/1TEBPlr #book #books #bookshop #indiebookshop #christianbookshop #christianbooks #spirituality #faith #review #authors #publishers #buylocal #books #reading #study #theology #scmpress #canterburypress #christianalternatives #johnhunt #christian #church #lincoln

Can I just say that though these books from @avemariapress via Alban Books that came across the desk here @unicorntreebks in Lincoln Central Market are a little American in style they are absolutely fantastic and fun... A good blend of modern world and faith (Black Widow and Mary Magdalene! Craft Brewing and St Benedict!) with highlights, considerations, activities and thought provoking ideas throughout. Seriously a little unusual but really good either for youth workers, hipsters, strong women, or fun folk of any type. I've certainly had fun reading them :) http://ift.tt/1TEBPlr http://ift.tt/1K9J1V7 Remember these and other goods books are available from your small and local independent Bookshops (like us here at Unicorn Tree Books in Lincoln Central Market) and making your purchases via them help keeps your community vibrant and shops alive :) #book #books #bookshop #indiebookshop #christianbookshop #christianbooks #spirituality #faith #hipster
