Seriously 'For Good - The Church and the Future of Welfare' is a short book of 90pp that packs well above its weight and truly is a must read for all interested or involved in knowing about and practicing transformative change in welfare issues... A real book of social change issues for churches (and wider!), an essential read from @canterburypress. Next up I can honestly say that 'Blue Planet Blue God' is the book as a Christian you need to be reading alongside Attenborough's Blue Planet! This book isnt just about climate change and water rights issues, but us about the wonder, majesty, and intrinsic beauty and power that is water in all its forms and how that deep peaks to the soul of us too. Beautiful and deep book from @scm_press. Next up, Christian Alternatives have published 'Why Progressives Need God' by Clatworthy, thisis a deeply rich and readable study (that reads a little like a philosophical manifesto in some parts) on monotheism for progressives. It's a deeply interesting read, especially as we dig down deeply into what 'Monotheism' really is and means... Especially in today's culture. Another good book for personal reading but that would make a great group discussion read if you ask me! Finally one I'm taking home next... 'New World, New Church' by Hannah Steel and from @scm_press... Looking at the theology of the emerging church movement and its proponents, should be interesting and thought provoking I'd think. And highlights, lowlights and celebrations in between. Lovely for an individual, good too for a group. The same for Goldsworthy's Jesus Through The Old Testament - filled with good stuff - easy diagrams, helpful key notes, concise breakdowns and correlations. A good blend of modern world and faith (Black Widow and Mary Magdalene! Craft Brewing and St Benedict!) with highlights, considerations, activities and thought provoking ideas throughout. Some seriously excellent new Journal Bibles are just out from @hodderfaith with the choice being which one to go for... Both have beautiful wide plain unlined margins with single column text that is perfect for either comprehensive note taking or for doing your own art work in. The Hannah Dunnett one has 32 full page reproductions of her excellent artwork... And full plain pages facing them for your own art work to be added. Truly lovely. However don't discount the plain covered journal lingerie bible because that plain cover just calls out for collaging or decorating... Don't be fooled by the covers and titles they aren't one for the girls and one for the boys but they are great devotional bible studies for anyone. Loving the type face in them as well on the opening 'diary/journal' bit as we get the story put over by the character in a really engaging way, before moving into the body of the study, which is also easy to follow and understand, and best yet in a really good decent sized comfort print. Today's reading... And can I just say I am loving Louis Giglio's new book - Goliath Must Fall. It's, as ever, a well centred easy to read book that pulls together Scripture and everyday life in an understandable and engaging way that moves the book just a little past the 'self help' genre that some books seem to fall into whilst professing to be about God... This one, it seems to me, has God and biblical wisdom at its core, with a good hit of dealing with the things that knock us down by making us face up to them and admit we are not David and just our own take on a slingshot and stone hit won't do it for us in taking out our problems - though they can be dealt with. Two very different but very good books recieved in at Unicorn Tree Books in Lincoln Central Market. I can honestly say I am devouring the 400+ pages of Michael Moynaugh's 'Church in Life' from @SCM_Press . It is refreshing, insightful, and affirming for all those who are building or working and worshipping in new ecclesial communities. It covers so much and talks to the heart of the subject of doing church, being church differently. I've been blown away by the chapter on 'Dissatisfaction: the vocational voyage' and entranced by the chapter 'Are they Church', and encouraged by the chapter 'Re-imaging the local church' to name just a few sections. This book is a brilliant and important contribution to understanding the new emerging church journey and place. A must read for so many people and churches I think. Looking forward to reading 'a church for the poor' next because these subjects really are key in this day and age and time.
